A credit freeze is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself from identity theft. It's free, takes about 10 minutes, and stops anyone — including criminals — from opening new credit in your name without your permission.
Most people don't do it because they don't know it exists. Here's exactly how.
What a Credit Freeze Does
When you freeze your credit, the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — lock your credit file. Lenders can't access it, which means no one can open a new credit card, loan, or line of credit in your name while the freeze is active.
This matters because identity theft almost always involves someone using your personal information to open new accounts. A credit freeze makes that impossible, even if a thief has your Social Security number, address, and date of birth.
What a Credit Freeze Does NOT Do
- It doesn't affect your credit score
- It doesn't prevent use of existing accounts
- It doesn't stop scammers from calling you
- It doesn't remove your information from data broker websites
It only prevents new credit from being opened. That's exactly what you want.
How to Freeze Your Credit at All Three Bureaus
You must freeze your credit at each bureau separately. It's free at all three.
Equifax: equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/credit-freeze/ — create an account and select "Add a Security Freeze."
Experian: experian.com/freeze/center.html — select "Add a security freeze" and create a PIN.
TransUnion: transunion.com/credit-freeze — create an account and activate the freeze.
The whole process takes about 10 minutes across all three. You'll receive a PIN or account login to unfreeze when needed.
How to Unfreeze When You Need To
If you're applying for credit, you can temporarily unfreeze for a specific lender or time window. Log back into each bureau's site, select "Lift Freeze," and specify the duration. Takes about 5 minutes.
Don't Forget ChexSystems and NCTUE
Banks use ChexSystems to screen new accounts, not the three major bureaus. If you want full protection, also freeze ChexSystems (chexsystems.com) and NCTUE (nctue.com).
Do It Now
Most people wait until after identity theft happens. At that point, freezing your credit doesn't undo the damage — it just prevents more. Take 10 minutes today and you'll never have to worry about someone opening fraudulent accounts in your name.
